Vince Young Won't Be Suspended For Altercation
(7/29 12:13 AM PT)
The Facts:
The NFL is not going to suspend Young for his involvement in a Dallas strip club altercation last month, according to sources familiar with the situation. The league is expected to make an announcement by the end of the week, possibly as early as Thursday.
Reported by the Nashville Tennessean
Diehards Line:
Young was cited for a misdemeanor assault following the June 13 incident. The next day, Young said he hoped it wouldn’t result in NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspending him: “I pray to God that Roger Goodell doesn't come down hard on me, because I definitely want to be here for my teammates.’’ Last month, Goodell said he planned to talk with Young at some point. The commissioner also indicated that first-time offenders like Young usually don’t warrant a suspension under the league’s personal conduct policy.

Malcolm Kelly Tweaks Hamstring Working With McNabb
(7/29 12:08 AM PT)
The Facts:
Kelly, vying for the No. 2 WR position, recently suffered a hamstring injury and might sit out practice Thursday. The injury occurred while Kelly participated in quarterback Donovan McNabb's "Hell Week" that began July 19. McNabb, as he did during his time with the Eagles, invited some of his new teammates to his Phoenix-area home for a week of grueling workouts and team building. Wideouts Devin Thomas, Santana Moss and Kelly were among those expected to participate.
Reported by the Washington Post
Diehards Line:
According to Post staffer Jason Reid, Kelly experienced tightness in his hamstring during one of the workouts. He immediately contacted the Redskins' medical/training staff for guidance. The Redskins plan to proceed cautiously with Kelly, who worked hard to overcome knee problems and microfracture surgery after his rookie season. Although the injury is not considered serious, the team would rather have Kelly rest and receive treatment than try to participate in the early stages of camp. Hamstring injuries can linger, especially when players rush back before they are completely healed.

Jets Finally Sign Mark Brunell
(7/28 11:24 PM PT)
The Facts:
The Jets have signed Mark Brunell, who backed up Drew Brees last season for the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, to a two-year contract.
Reported by ESPN.com
Diehards Line:
The move Wednesday had been expected for several months as New York sought an experienced quarterback to back up Mark Sanchez. The Jets couldn't sign Brunell until free agency restrictions were lifted last week. Brunell, 39, played the last two years in New Orleans and the previous four with Washington after nine years with Jacksonville. The three-time Pro Bowl selection spent his first two years as Brett Favre's backup in Green Bay. The Jets had Kellen Clemens, Erik Ainge and Kevin O'Connell as backups last year, and at least one will likely be cut before training camp.

Saints Add Veteran QB Patrick Ramsey
(7/28 10:55 PM PT)
The Facts:
The New Orleans Saints finally made official a deal that has been in the works for months when they announced that Ramsey has signed a one-year contract.
Reported by The National Football Post
Diehards Line:
Ramsey is expected to compete to be the backup for Drew Brees in training camp and will have to fend off competition from Chase Daniel, the former Missouri star who alternated between the 53-man roster and the practice squad last season. Ramsey has starred in New Orleans before as a record setter at Tulane. But as NFP staffer Brad Biggs suggests, Ramsey's NFL career hasn’t been as successful. A former first-round draft pick by the Washington Redskins, Ramsey has made only 24 career starts. He spent time with Detroit and Tennessee last season and has also made stops in Denver and with the New York Jets.

Chiefs Get Rookie Dexter McCluster Under Contract
(7/28 10:36 PM PT)
The Facts:
The Kansas City Chiefs have announced they have signed their two second-round picks -- McCluster and Javier Arenas.
Reported by ESPN.com
Diehards Line:
The Chiefs plan to play McCluster primarily at slot receiver though he could get a handful of carries in the backfield as well. Dwayne Bowe and Chris Chambers are the primary receivers and the team also likes Jerheme Urban who they added this offseason. McCluster has only adequate speed to go with exceptional quickness but team officials love his versatility.

GM Prepared For Lengthy Holdout By Vincent Jackson
(7/28 10:07 PM PT)
The Facts:
Two days before the Chargers begin training camp, GM A.J. Smith is operating under the assumption that the team will be without the services of two top players. WR Vincent Jackson and LT Marcus McNeill are expected to hold out for an extended period. Speaking about McNeill and Jackson, Smith said Wednesday that he has been told that the two players will be “out for a considerable amount of time.”
Reported by ESPN.com
Diehards Line:
Smith said he, at this point, is expecting that both McNeill and Jackson will hold out for the first 10 games of the regular season and then report to accrue an NFL season. “We’re preparing for that. If we get that back after 10 games, then we’ll deal with that," Smith said. The high-end contract extension Antonio Gates signed on Wednesday making him the league's highest-paid TE ( see previous) probably won't sit well with either of the holdouts. Making matters worse -- from a Fantasy perspective -- is the fact McNeill is said to be ahead of Jackson on the team's list of priorities. Malcom Floyd, Legedu Naanee and Craig Davis are looking like the top three options unless and/or until Jackson returns.

Panthers Stewart, Smith Open Training Camp On PUP
(7/28 6:27 PM PT)
The Facts:
The Panthers just announced that six players were placed on the active-physically unable to perform list, and won't practice with the team tomorrow when camp opens. The list is headlined by RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) and RT Jeff Otah (knee), both of whom were expected to participate in some form early in camp. Also on the list was G Duke Robinson, who failed the conditioning test, along with DT Louis Leonard (knee), WR Steve Smith ( arm) and LB Thomas Davis (knee).
Reported by the Charlotte Observer
Diehards Line:
Players can come off the PUP list at any time, but not having Stewart and Otah complicates the preparation of an offense that was expected to be the strength of this team. Now, RB Tyrell Sutton will get more reps with the regular offense, and Geoff Schwartz will likely work in Otah's place. Smith is coming off a broken arm and isn't expected to work until later this summer. Stewart has off-season foot surgery but is said to be at 100 percent. Sounds like the Panthers will be taking their usual cautious approach but we'll continue to watch for more.

Chargers Make Antonio Gates The NFL's Highest Paid TE
(7/28 5:18 PM PT)
The Facts:
Gates has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the San Diego Chargers. The deal, which runs through the 2015 season, is worth $7.235 million per season, with $20.4 million in guarantees, a source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.
Reported by ESPN.com
Diehards Line:
The extension makes Gates the NFL's highest paid tight end. Although he's been slowed at times by various ailments, Gates posted a career-best 1,157 yards last season. With 57 touchdowns over the past six seasons, it's not hard to justify the Chargers' willingness to invest as heavily as they have.

Cable: Jason Campbell Undisputed Starter
(7/28 1:34 PM PT)
The Facts:
SI's Jim Trotter has reported via twitter that Raiders HC Tom Cable has formally named Campbell as the starting quarterback for the Raiders and indicated there would be no open competition for the job.
Reported by the Red Zone
Diehards Line:
Cable praised Campbell's "leadership and professionalism" and said the players have responded to that. Periodic 2009 starter Bruce Gradkowski is the favorite to win the backup job and proved to the Raiders last year that he can be a competent starter should Campbell get injured.

Marion Barber Still The Cowboys' Starter
(7/28 11:11 AM PT)
The Facts:
The debate can go on and on if he's the best running back on the team or not, but Barber is the starting tailback as of right now. And it doesn't really look like it's going to change anytime soon.
Reported by DallasCowobys.com
Diehards Line:
So wrote Nick Eatman of the team's official web site. ... After telling reporters earlier this year he thought it was time for Felix Jones to take over as the starter, owner Jerry Jones backed of that statement in May. And even though Felix Jones provides greater home-run ability, it appears a re-energized and rejuvenated Barber is going to make it very difficult for Jones to move ahead of him. As Eatman summed up: "Barber is still starting and the Cowboys probably won't change that -- not for a while at least."
